Scripture Hall
Located at the center of IWU's campus—less than a five-minute walk to any classroom—is Scripture Hall. The largest residence hall on campus, it was built in 2001 and houses men, mostly upperclassmen. This innovative four-story structure was designed to foster community among students, boasting clusters of rooms and shared living areas. Scripture’s four- and eight-person suites are designed with bedrooms surrounding one large common room and bathroom facilities. This establishes core communities on campus, allowing students to identify and connect with smaller groups among IWU’s larger population.
Residence life at Scripture Hall centers around fun, competition, and spiritual growth. One highlight is the "Scripture Cup," a year-long cumulative competition involving mini-contests like dodgeball, ping pong, trivia, foosball, Ultimate Frisbee, and indoor mini-golf. At the end of the year, the unit with the most points wins a trophy and bragging rights. There's also a week-long session each semester called "Special Ops," where residents participate in intensive spiritual, physical, and academic disciplines. Additionally, the hall hosts a service once a month for worship and prayer.
Each suite in Scripture Hall has its own living room, allowing more space, more flexibility, and creative room setup. It also provides a place for residents to hang out without affecting others' sleeping. There's one bathroom per four or eight residents, and each bedroom has a large walk-in closet. High-speed Internet ports are available for each student, as is an optional cable TV connection per suite. All suites are carpeted and furnished, with individual heating and air conditioning units, and laundry facilities are available on every floor.
Because micro-communities are one of the key features in Scripture Hall, there's little need for a large, open lobby—the kind that's common in many university dorms. Instead, Scripture offers community areas and study rooms on each of its four floors. Here, students can meet for residence life activities, group study sessions, and everyday relaxing. Scripture’s main entrance features a kitchen area, a TV lounge, and a leadership development area—all available for student use. In addition, there’s a computer lounge, the "Cove" library room for quiet study space, and a large prayer chapel area. Scripture is home to the only parlor on campus, complete with a Billiard Table, and the Scripture game room has ping pong, foosball, and boccerball tables. The lobby has a fireplace and a front desk which offers snack items for purchase.
Hall leadership in Scripture consists of a live-in Resident Director (RD), a Resident Assistant (RA) staff, a Hall Chaplain, Outreach Coordinator, Events Coordinator, and Diversity Coordinator. Together, these individuals plan activities and implement programs designed to meet students' spiritual, academic, social, and personal needs. The majority of Scripture's 251 residents are upperclassmen, with freshmen consisting of about 25 percent of the total occupancy.
An IWU Namesake
Scripture Hall is named in honor of the late Fred and Leveda Scripture, IWU benefactors. Although both were raised in the Marion area, neither was familiar with Indiana Wesleyan until their retirement years. It was then, upon visiting campus and becoming better acquainted with the school, when the Scriptures decided to make IWU the primary beneficiary of their estate. Following Fred Scripture’s death in February 2001, Leveda accepted the University's offer to name its newest men’s dormitory "Scripture Hall."
