The Honors Center
Originally built by the student body to serve as IWU’s Student Center, the present-day
Honors Center houses the programs of the John Wesley Honors College (JWHC). Featuring a Seminar
Room, Study Room, Lounge Area, Kitchenette/Snack Bar, Common Room, and an Office, the building
has become a place that promotes the active community of the JWHC—beyond taking classes
there, students regularly spend time studying and hanging out at the Honors Center.
Seminar Room
Boasting a recent Honors College Student Association (HCSA) makeover, the Seminar Room hosts Honors College classes in a
comfortable setting. Equipped with a computer and a PowerPoint/video projector, it easily allows for the integration of technology
in learning, and since most JWHC classes are capped at only fifteen students, the Honors Center Seminar Room provides plenty of
space for them. In the evenings, students sometimes use this room for studying if no classes are in session.
Study Room
With a small group of tables and chairs as well as a TV, VCR, and DVD player, the Study Room is used mostly for study, but
occasionally students may watch a movie or work on a video project here.
Lounge Area
Near the main entrance of the Honors Center is a small area with couches and reading material that’s been donated to
the JWHC by IWU professors. Students commonly take a seat and catch up on the news here.
Kitchenette/Snack Bar
The HCSA operates a snack bar for JWHC students offering conveniently-priced snacks they can enjoy while studying and hanging
out. There’s also a refrigerator, microwave, coffee grinder, and coffee maker in the area for student use.
Office
The student workers’ office at the Honors Center helps with admissions, handles JWHC financial work, and maintains
activities for HNR100: Honors College Forum. The office is also active in working with the HCSA and its sponsored events.
Common Room
The heart of the Honors Center, the Common Room has several couches, chairs, and tables as well as a television. A good amount
of JWHC community happens here—playing games, having conversations, watching movies, indulging in snacks and coffee, and
working on group projects. The Common Room also hosts poetry readings, Forum event discussions, graduate school talks, and other
social activities.
Elsewhere in the Honors Center, there are bulletin boards which post local and campus events, study abroad opportunities,
essay contests, scholarship and fellowship prospects, conference and lecture schedules, news articles, opinion pieces, and
recognition of JWHC student success. There is also a computer for students to use for e-mail, research, and Internet access.
