Evans Hall
On the south side of campus you’ll find Evans Hall, which houses 206 women ranging from freshmen through seniors. Although the majority of its residents are underclassmen, each year a number of upperclassmen return to the Hall so they can continue to call Evans “home.” Its live-in Resident Director (RD) and Resident Assistants (RA’s) set the tone for the hall, planning activities, offering weekly Bible studies on each unit, and meeting with students for casual chats on a regular basis.
Activities and outreach are an important component of life in Evans Hall. Throughout the year, residents have numerous opportunities to interact with each other and with the community around them. Recent Evans activities include “Mission Impossible,” an intense competition among units to complete 24 tasks in 24 hours; an “Evening of Elegance” formal event; various events with their brother hall, Hodson Hall, and an all-hall Christmas gift exchange the morning before winter break. Outreach also happens regularly, a service auction for charity occurs with the combined effort of Hodson Hall, a unit outreach challenge, and a whole day devoted to efforts within the Marion community. On the whole, students in Evans are excited to be a part of what is going on in their Hall—there’s a healthy sense of pride that comes from being a part of Evans.
Resident rooms in Evans Hall resemble an “S” shape, with a distinct front and back side to the room. This allows roommates to have their own separate areas if they choose, although many roommates choose a different layout—making one side of their room a sleeping area and one side a living area. In addition, Evans Hall is arranged in suites, with a bathroom used to connect two adjacent rooms.* With only two people in each of those rooms, that means the bathroom isn’t for a whole floor of women; it’s for just four women.
Along with Hodson and Kem Halls, Evans overlooks a large lawn space complete with park benches, two sand volleyball courts, and a full-size, lighted basketball court. Toward the beginning and end of each school year, this area comes alive with pickup games, intramural tournaments, and picnic-blanket study sessions, providing Evans residents with active student life just outside their windows.
Built in 1993, Evans Hall is fully carpeted and furnished. Each room has individualized heating and air conditioning controls as well as high-speed Internet access and optional cable TV connection. There are laundry facilities on each wing of each floor as well as a Hall kitchen, TV room, and computer lab. In addition, the front desk is stocked with snacks and beverages available for purchase, and the Evans workout room is complete with an elliptical machine, a treadmill, an adjustable weight bench, and a full-sized punching bag. There’s also a coffee-house style meeting room known as Graffiti Grind, where one whole wall is reserved for the signatures of current and past Evans women.
*The exception to this is a large single-unit room on each unit
that has its own bathroom and houses four residents.
