Costs

NOTE: Students are required to register at IWU before leaving for their semester abroad, and are generally expected to take a full-time load of classes, or at least 12 credit hours and no more than 16.

All semester abroad programs will cost at least the amount of IWU tuition, room and board*.  Any program costs above that charged to IWU by the cooperative program will be passed on to the student, and is the student’s responsibility. Some programs have out-of-pocket expenses during your semester abroad – please make careful note of those and plan accordingly.

* NOTE: IWU room and board rates for semester abroad students are set at the current year’s rate for the semester abroad, not at the student’s “frozen” benefit rate. The student will be eligible for this benefit rate upon return to campus, but must re-apply for that benefit.

The cooperative program you have chosen will charge IWU. Once you receive your bill from IWU, you will pay all program costs to IWU (less any financial aid per your award notification).

Estimated Costs: IWU Tuition (current for year of study)
+    IWU Room & Board (at current year’s rate, NOT student’s “frozen” rate benefit)
  • Commuter students will need to keep these charges in mind
+    Any other charges from the program
  • Talk to the Global Studies Supervisor if you are uncertain about these costs
Travel Costs (depending on the program)
  • Often includes a charge for a visa entry to the country, see program details for more information
Program Application fees (varies by program)
  Passport Application fees
Vaccination & healthcare requirements (varies by program)
  • Including student travel health insurance
  In-country excursions
  Incidentals

Financial Aid

NOTE: Financial Aid is not guaranteed, and dependent on timely and complete application with the Global Studies office, and approval by the Academic Affairs office.

  • Most external sources of scholarship and financial aid will be applicable, such as state grants, PELL grants, and student loans.  There are some scholarships available for study abroad programs; please discuss any other scholarships for which you apply with your financial aid counselor, as they may adversely affect other financial aid you already have been awarded.
  • Partial IWU institutional aid (up to 50%) may be awarded to students for cooperative programs. Please discuss this with your financial aid counselor.
