Tutorial Assistance
Course specific tutoring is offered to all IWU students free of charge as tutors are available*. Students should request tutors as early in the semester as they sense a need for help and for maximum benefit, by mid-term. *Note: Not all courses are instructor-approved for tutoring services, nor can we guarantee a tutor.
- Tutoring assignments occur through the tenth (10th)
week of classes.
- Tutors are secured on a first-come, first-served
basis with every reasonable effort made to arrange
for tutor assignments.
- Tutees are placed with a student tutor for weekly
tutoring sessions that run throughout the semester.
Students who need to sign-up for a tutor or who wish
to do tutoring should link to Forms on the above menu or
come into The Aldersgate Center (Student Center 220).
Tutorial Objectives
Tutoring instruction is an effective means of assisting
students with specific learning needs. Under the guidance
of a qualified tutor, a student is able to learn at a
pace and in a manner suitable to his/her individual needs.
Indiana Wesleyan University recognizes the excellent academic
and personal qualifications of its students and draws
upon them as the primary resource for a comprehensive
peer tutoring program through The Aldersgate Center.
- Tutors are IWU students who have had or are currently
receiving tutor service training.
- Each tutor is recommended by an IWU faculty member,
interviewed and selected for competency in subject
matter, communication skills, interest in and ability
to handle learning problems, desire to work individually
with fellow students, and dedication to improving
their tutoring skills.
Tutorial support seeks:
- To increase a student's likelihood of success in
a specific course by providing him/her with concerned,
qualified tutors.
- To improve study skills, thereby assisting IWU
students to become more independent, self-confident,
and efficient learners, better prepared to meet the
university's academic standards and also successfully
attain their educational goals.
- To provide tutors an opportunity to learn skills
in organization and presentation of course material
and study skills in a manner conducive to aid fellow
students to succeed.
