The Recreation and Wellness Center
In 1998 and 1999, Indiana Wesleyan expanded its Robert R. Luckey Arena (built in 1980) with an extensive $10 million construction project. The result of that renovation is the current Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC), IWU's primary site for health education and fitness. An award-winning indoor athletic and exercise facility covering 117,500 square feet on the east side of campus, the RWC is the second largest structure at IWU. Today, it encompasses an updated Luckey Arena as well as many other health, wellness, and recreation features.
One of the most popular spots in the RWC is the intramural activity center, a large multipurpose area comprising three full-sized basketball courts. Easily adaptable for indoor volleyball, badminton, and soccer, the center also has two indoor batting cages and an elevated 1/10-mile walking and jogging track. Throughout the year, IWU students, faculty, and staff make good use of this area-in general recreation and exercise as well as in intramural sports competitions. It's also used as a practice and training facility for the IWU "Wildcats" athletic teams.*
On the other end of the RWC, you'll find several other areas of interest, including a fitness room, a free-weight room, four racquetball courts, and an indoor climbing wall. There's also another full-size basketball court as well as a six-lane, short course competitive swimming pool offering one-meter diving. All recreational and training equipment in these areas are accessible to IWU students, staff, and faculty members, as well as to a limited number of community members each year.
With 14 locker rooms spaced throughout the building, the RWC is able to accommodate the student body, coaches, Wildcat athletes, visiting teams, and game officials all at once. Because of features like these, the RWC can house multiple-team events without difficulty. This enables IWU to host a number of high school, state, and collegiate regional and national competitions-most notable of these were the National Christian College Athletic Association's National Championships for Women's Volleyball and Men's Basketball.
Beyond general fitness and team training, the RWC also houses IWU's Division of Health, Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sports Science. Along with seven classrooms in the building, there's a physical laboratory, a state-of-the-art Athletic Training Center, and a Human Performance Lab. Athletic offices are located on the second floor.
Not only highly functional, the RWC is also architecturally significant, winning a 2000 Award of Honor for design excellence. Its many noteworthy features include numerous spectator areas, a modern exterior, and an attractive, balconied two-story lobby.
