Beard Arts Center
Among the academic buildings on the west side of IWU’s campus is Beard Arts Center, a
facility devoted primarily to the Division of Art. Housing classrooms for Art as well as faculty offices, Beard Arts Center features modern facilities for art
education, and art studio. These include state-of-the-art computer
equipment and software, and fully-equipped photography labs.
In order to train IWU art students in a diverse range of skills and expertise, Beard Arts
Center offers a variety of equipment and facilities for its art specialties:
Ceramics students make use of the Ceramic Studio, which includes an Oxidation Kiln room and
six kilns, one exterior kiln shed with a large gas downdraft Bailey kiln, a Raku kiln, a glaze
room, a chemical storage room, a Greenware storage room, a Pug mill, and a clay mixer.
Students studying Graphic Arts have access to two Mac labs (36 G5 CPU’s and flat
screens), a high-end color laser printer, various flatbed and film scanners, a Matt cutter and
a 60-inch Roto Trim cutter.
IWU’s Painting students make use of large studios for both Oil and Watercolor Painting.
These are equipped with easels and drawing tables.
Students interested in Printmaking will spend time in IWU’s Printmaking Studio, which
features two litho presses.
Photography students also have access to the Mac Labs and graphics technology as well as
twelve small-format Giclee printers and one larger format printer (44-inch). There are two film
processing labs and two print processing labs with 18 enlargers. In addition, Beard offers
printers and scanners for digital photography, a UV Film/plate burner, a portrait studio with
eight mono light heads, a product studio with three power pack light systems and twelve light
heads, two large-format cameras, and six digital cameras, as well as medium format cameras and
portable lighting systems and meters.
Students learning Sculpture have access to the Sculpture Studio, which includes a wood shop,
a tool room, a work room, and a lecture studio.
Other features of the Beard Arts Center include a lecture hall, student lounge, and various
display cases. In addition, several galleries make it possible to showcase student projects and
key pieces donated to IWU’s Art Department. At points during each semester, these
galleries exhibit art shows by graduating seniors.
Beard Arts Center was built in 1992. It is two stories and 32,400 square feet.
An IWU Namesake:
Beard Arts Center is named after the late Lee and the late Edna Beard. Mr. Beard, of Fort Wayne,
IN, was a retired electrical engineer who donated the funding necessary to realize his dream of
offering arts education at Indiana Wesleyan.

Beard Arts Center, 4200 John Wesley Court
Beard Arts Center is located just inside IWU’s main entrance off South Washington Street,
east of the John Wesley Administration Building, between the Maxwell Center and Goodman Hall.
The main entrance (with access to art galleries and faculty offices) is located at the west end
of the building.
Entering campus from the west on University Boulevard (just north of South 44th Street),
turn left (north) on John Wesley Court. Beard Arts Center is the second building on the right.
Parking: A large parking lot is located across the drive, south of the John Wesley
Administration Building.
