Stress and Anxiety

All college students are familiar with stress and anxiety. It is part of daily life in the university setting. Academic and social pressure can combine to leave a student feeling overwhelmed. Many of these feelings can be dealt with through physical activity, taking study breaks, spending time with a friend, or by talking to your Resident Assistant (R.A.), Resident Director (R.D.), or a mentor. Sometimes, the stress and anxiety can become unbearable and can severely impact daily life. It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of anxiety so that they can be appropriately addressed.

Signs and Symptoms of Stress and Anxiety
  • Inability to concentrate, confusion, indecisiveness
  • Persistent worrying
  • Social isolation
  • Depression
  • Increased irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Physical symptoms such as upset stomach, indigestion, muscle tightness, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, headaches, frequent illnesses.
  • Panic attacks

In their mild form, many of these symptoms may be the result of adjustment to college or the academic and social pressures of university life. We suggest you discuss these concerns with your Resident Director (R.D.). They may have some suggestions and resources to help you through your school related anxiety and stress.

If the symptoms are persistent and severe and they have started to have an impact on your daily life (school or work performance, relationships) or you are having recurring thoughts of harming yourself, contact The Aldersgate Center to speak with a counselor.
