The counseling services at The Aldersgate Center are here to
help you with a wide
range of concerns. When you have reached a point where stress/anxiety,
emotional, psychological, or relationship issues have begun
to affect your daily functioning, please call to schedule an
appointment with one of our counselors. You will not be billed
for any counseling services that you receive. The services are
free of charge. The services are also strictly
confidential, offering you a safe quiet environment in which
to process your thoughts and feelings. Some situations in life
present us with challenges that we are just not able to cope
with on our own. If this is the case for you, please call x2257
for an appointment.
There are some basic tips and suggestions that you can follow
to decrease your stress/anxiety and to alleviate or prevent
mental health distress.
- Get an adequate amount of sleep. 6 to 8 hours of uninterrupted
sleep per night is recommended. Yes, this is possible for
college students. It just takes good planning sometimes.
- Eat 3 healthy meals a day and healthy snacks in between.
College students often turn to quick and convenient foods
to satisfy hunger during their busy schedules. This can
be quick and easy, but is often unhealthy because the snacks
chosen are high in sugar and low in nutritional value. They
may lead to a quick burst of energy, but do not provide
what your body needs to maintain the busy and hectic college
lifestyle. Use sugary food and carbonated beverages in moderation.
A healthy diet can improve your physical health, concentration,
and even help reduce stress and anxiety.
- Use good time management skills. Having a well planned
schedule can help you work through even your busiest days.
Include in your schedule; class times, chapel times, meal
time, study times, and even your social time. Sticking with
the schedule can help you avoid procrastination and gives
you a sense of “getting things done”.
- Balance study time and socialization time. Remember,
too much of either and none of the other can have some negative
effects. When socializing try to do it in person as much
as possible (i.e. Don’t instant message your roommate
or a friend who lives down the hall.). Try to interact with
others face-to-face.
- Get some exercise. Exercise is physically and mentally
good for you.
- Try to keep things in perspective. “Don’t
sweat the small stuff”.
