World Impact History

"When I came to Indiana Wesleyan University in 1994 to start the Intercultural Studies department, we had a lot of students who were showing interest in the Intercultural Studies major. This was great, until I began to realize that many of the students had never been overseas or involved in missionary work. So some of them had unrealistic views of cross-cultural ministries. I was concerned that they didn’t know what they were getting themselves into. I felt like a missions experience was needed to help students to understand the realities of doing missionary work. Part of the reason for starting World Impact was to help filter out those who were not truly “called” to live and minister overseas as well as to confirm the call of students who were.

But beyond being a filter, my main goal for the World Impact program was to give students opportunities to be exposed to the world and to become a part of iwu’s world changer philosophy. Most of all, I wanted to invite students into an experience that would teach them that true worship doesn’t just take place in a worship service, but it can happen when they’re out touching the lives of people with the love of Jesus Christ.

We started small with only one team the first year. And now we send about 25 teams – with a total of almost 300 students.”
