Martin Hall
Combining the enthusiasm of new students with the experience of upperclassmen, Martin Hall is specially designed to promote interaction between entering and returning students. Over half the residents of Martin Hall are freshmen, and when these women arrive on campus, they’re warmly welcomed into the IWU community by a mentorship program instilled in their Hall.
Although an entire wing of MartinHall is for freshmen only, special efforts are made to link students from that wing to upperclassmen in the hall. A larger-than-average staff of Resident Assistants (RA’s) is present on the freshman wing, forming relationships with incoming residents. On top of that, each new student is put together with a returning “Big Sister,” allowing for natural mentoring and friendships. This creates a unique spirit among residents, giving the women of Martin Hall a distinct sense of connectedness during university life.
The community at Martin Hall is led by a live-in staff including a Resident Director (RD), the RA’s, a Resident Chaplain, and Residence Hall Association members. These individuals plan activities, oversee programs, and arrange opportunities for spiritual growth among residents. Recent events include a talent show, a hall slip ‘n’ slide, a cookout, and Finals Week desserts for late-night cram sessions. RA’s lead weekly Bible studies on each unit, and there’s also an all-hall prayer walk, praise and worship times, and a biannual charity fundraiser meal.
Like Evans, Hodson, and Reed, the resident rooms in Martin Hall resemble an “S” shape. These partially-separated front and back sides create two spaces and a variety of options for students. Martin Hall roommates can choose to keep their belongings separate, or they can combine their things and split the room into halves: one side a sleeping area, one side a living area. Additionally, Martin Hall is arranged in suites—every two rooms are connected by a bathroom between them.* All rooms are carpeted and furnished, with high-speed Internet access for each resident and an optional cable TV connection.
Completed in 2004, Martin Hall’s layout is designed to encourage relationships among residents. The main lobby is beautiful and open, with a fireplace and balcony designed to feel welcoming and “homey.” There are three TV lounges, one per floor, and wings on the second and third floors connect with a lounge area between them. Martin Hall has a small chapel, a computer lab, a workout room, a kitchen area, laundry facilities on each floor, and a front desk that offers a variety of snacks for purchase. The Hall also has its own private backyard, which is overlooked by half the student rooms. When the weather’s nice, this area becomes a safe haven for residents to study on blankets or chat with friends while basking in the sun. It also creates a nice spot for Martin Hall’s regular barbecues.
*The exception to this is a large single-unit room on each unit
that has its own bathroom and houses four residents.
