Burns Hall's very own Intensive Care Unit, Mahoney ICU, utilizes state-of-the-art equipment to replicate the type of real-life critical care settings that IWU nurses can expect outside classroom walls. Complete with a Crash Cart, an AED simulator, PCA pumps, Kangaroo pumps, and IV pumps, Mahoney gives students the ability to practice intensive care scenarios on computerized mannequins which simulate real human patients. These interactive “SimMan” devices let students build both individual and team aptitude by practicing nursing procedures, from basic to advanced life support skills and assessment.

Other features in Mahoney ICU include head-wall systems simulating actual clinical setups, oxygen (simulated with room air), suction units, and medical air units-all of which function as if they were in a real hospital room. In addition, a high-tech hospital bed is multifunctional, providing multiple adjustments for patient care. The bed can also weigh patients, sound its own alarm, and rapidly change positions in the event of a simulated emergency.
