John Wesley Administration Building
Originally built in 1894, the historic John Wesley Administration Building (JWAB) is the oldest structure remaining on IWU’s campus. At the time of its construction, it was only the third building to be raised at what was then known as “Marion Normal College” (founded in 1890.) Since then, the stately structure has stood watch over IWU’s campus, observing generations of change and welcoming thousands of new students over the years.
The architecture of the JWAB has been remarkable since the building’s earliest days. An elegant tympanum (entrance archway), a grand central staircase, and a prominent spire are just a few of the building’s distinguishing characteristics. Today, these sweeping features serve as tribute to days gone by; in the beginning, they made the JWAB “one of the prettiest and most substantial buildings in the city.” When the facility was built, especially notable were its 800-seat auditorium, a pipe organ, and six large “recitation rooms,” as well as the fact that it would not only be piped for gas but also lighted by electricity!
After 108 years on IWU’s campus, in 2002 the JWAB underwent a complete renovation, which gave a facelift to the facility while incorporating modern features and technology. Renovationists took special care to maintain the building’s integrity as they added a fire safety system, a data-networking system, energy-efficient windows, and other conveniences including an elevator and wheelchair accessibility. In addition, the main entrance was relocated to the south side of the building, and the roof was completely replaced, as were the building’s electrical and mechanical systems. The duration of the renovation project lasted eight months and cost $2.5 million.
Today, the John Wesley Administration Building houses the President’s Office and the offices for University Advancement, as well as the Board Room for IWU’s Board of Trustees, the Provost and a large display room paying tribute to John Wesley. The building’s dedication and official naming took place during Homecoming Week in 2003.
