Burns Hall of Science and Nursing
In order to continue providing the highest quality in nursing and science programs, in 2000
Indiana Wesleyan added 43,000 square feet of state-of-the-art laboratory, clinical, and
instructional space to Burns Hall. Thanks to generous contributions of many donors as well as
a multi-million dollar grant from the Lilly Endowment, IWU's science hall now encompasses an
impressive 75,000 square feet. Designed with science students in mind, Burns offers high-tech
equipment and modern laboratories on its three floors:
1st Floor: Nursing
IWU's Division of Nursing facility is impressive. It includes an Intensive Care Unit,
two practice rooms (four-bed and eight-bed), a medication room, a nursing multimedia
classroom, four private medical surgical rooms, and ten physical assessment exam rooms.
As part of Burns Hall of Science and Nursing 2000 remodeling project, the Division of
Nursing program installed new equipment totaling $300,000. Other recent additions include
three adult and child simulation mannequins, a mechanical lift for transferring clients,
blood pressure training arms, medication carts, and otoscopes and ophthalmoscopes.
This unique setup allows professors at IWU to simulate a number of realistic patient
care scenarios including cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, arrhythmia (harmful heart
activities), and wound care. Fifteen patient care mannequins let students practice
advanced nursing procedures. Students practice thousands of hours each year in the Brooks
Fortune Simulation Skills Lab under the supervision of bachelor's prepared registered
nurses.
2nd and 3rd Floors: Natural Sciences
The remainder of Burns Hall (including some of the first floor) is reserved for
equations, dissections, experiments, and research. With 22 classrooms and labs, two
computer labs, and three terraced lecture rooms for larger audiences, the Hall is
well-equipped to house students pursuing degrees in physics, biology, and chemistry.

Along with the 2000 Burns remodeling project, $100,000 was installed in the Hall's biology,
chemistry, and physics labs. As a result, students in the natural sciences benefit greatly:
Biology students can experience a wide range of molecular biology techniques, dissection, and
animal biology. Physics students are provided labs with a wide array of optics and electronic
equipment. Chemistry students have access to GC-mass spectrometry, high-pressure liquid
chromatography, FTIR, atomic absorption, UV-vis, a fluorescence spectrometer, and a nuclear
magnetic resonance spectrometer.
Burns Hall also features a large third-floor balcony, which provides a gathering area for
students between classes and an outdoor lookout over IWU's campus. In addition, Burns
occasionally serves as an outdoor movie theater, with films projected-giant-sized-onto the
west wall and comfortable seating available for students on a grassy incline beside the Hall.
An IWU Namesake:
Burns Hall was named in honor of the late Dr. C. Maurice Burns, who taught classes for 32
years. A PhD in microbiology, he implemented IWU's prestigious nursing program and instituted
the campus video productions unit.
GETTING THERE:
Burns Hall, 4004 South Selby Street
