MEDIA COMMUNICATION MAJOR:
New major provides full media coverage.

So you feel called to use stories to communicate truth, and you want to reach as many people as possible. But some people only listen to the radio, some only watch TV, some just surf the Internet, and some just read the newspaper. No problem.

If you know you want to be a professional communicator but you can’t decide on just one form of communication to study, don’t worry. You don't have to. In fact, if you want to be an effective communicator, you really shouldn't limit yourself to just one format. That’s why Indiana Wesleyan University has created a brand new major in Media Communication.

At IWU, the Media Communication major will prepare you to use radio, television, film, theatre, print media (newspapers and magazines), speech and digital media, such as the Internet, to tell the stories that need to be told. Choose your concentration in either production or performance.

New facility serves as media center

With a brand new $12 million building serving as media communication headquarters, you’ll have hands-on experience right at your fingertips. The ultra modern, 65,000-square foot building houses a digital newsroom and production space for The Sojourn, IWU’s campus newspaper, along with broadcasting facilities, which include two TV studios, radio broadcast studio and eight editing suites for local television station WIWU-TV 51 and WIWU-FM, the university’s new student-managed radio operation. The new facility also houses a photojournalism lab, a digital classroom, computer labs and lecture halls. With this new facility as the perfect stage, you’ll be set to perform your best.

Apply your skills to campus media

The Sojourn won 23 awards at the Indiana Collegiate Press Association in 2006, including “Newspaper of the Year” in Division 3 schools. Entirely student-managed and student-written, The Sojourn awards stipends for all editors, business manager and photography staff.

Our television station produces Crossroads, a Grant County-based program that showcases events happening in Grant County and individuals who are serving the community. We also produce an art program, Fireside Sketches, with internationally known artists and IWU art professor Rod Crossman. Wildcat Central is a popular sports show complete with event previews, recaps and interviews with coaches and players. All of these programs, plus the student-staffed radio station, seek student production and talent.

Cover the nation’s capital

Off-campus study opportunities can further develop your skills. During the semester-long Washington Journalism Center, a BestSemester program of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities, you’ll live and learn in the nation's capital while writing stories about the country’s newsmakers during your internships. WJC students leave the program with published clips with The Washington Times, The Washington Post, United Press International, Scripps Howard News Service and more.

Through the BestSemester program Los Angeles Film Studies Center, you’ll take 10 credits of courses and earn six credits serving in internships in Hollywood as support personnel to producers, writers, directors, agents, post-production personnel and others. Internships have been provided at such companies as 20th Century Fox Casting, Atlas Entertainment, Lakeshore Entertainment, Miramax Films and more.

Here at IWU, we have everything you need to achieve your professional dreams. Come write your story with IWU’s Media Communication program.
