Canadian Student Information
Indiana Wesleyan University features a distinctly Christian approach to higher education. Our uniqueness is demonstrated by nationally recognized faculty and coaches. The faculty is comprised of Christian scholars who integrate biblical principles, values and faith in the classroom, athletics and co-curriculum activities. Bible classes and chapel, along with accountability, discipleship, and Bible study groups, encourage and enhance spiritual growth among our students.
Significant campus development includes construction of three new residence halls, an athletic field complex, a student center, an art-communication classroom building, a 70,000 square foot music, chapel, and performing arts center and a wellness and recreation center. Many new fields of academic study have produced dynamic enrollment growth.
Welcome Canadians
This Web page is designed to address your concerns as a Canadian about an Indiana Wesleyan education.
Coming to IWU isn't as hard as it looks--just ask any one of our current Canadian students.
Applying For Financial Aid
Indiana Wesleyan is committed to the Canadian student. For this reason, we have a financial aid program targeted directly at the Canadian dollar. The Canadian scholarship strives to make an equivalency between the U.S. dollar and the Canadian dollar, but it is
not an exact exchange.
IWU has set the university exchange scholarship at 25 percent. Here is how it works:
Step 1: The student's cost to the university is totaled (tuition, room, and board).
Step 2: The student's other awards are subtracted from the cost.
Step 3: The remaining amount is multiplied by the Canadian Scholarship rate (25 percent).
All Canadians are eligible to apply for on-campus employment; which can amount to about $1,700 U.S. per year. Canadian Wesleyans are also eligible for the international Wesleyan grant of $1,200 U.S. per year. Dependents of full-time pastors are eligible for the $1,800 U.S. grant. In addition, IWU will match contributions made by churches, up to $750 U.S. per year ($1,500 U.S. total).
For more information go to the Canadian Student Financial Aid Facts Page.
Paying Your Expenses
Since all payments to IWU must be received in U.S. funds, it is recommended that the student exchange Canadian currency for U.S. currency before crossing into the States. It is likely that Canadian banks and lenders will give a better exchange rate than banks and lenders in Indiana. If you are sending money, you can use a foreign draft, cable remittance, or registered mail. As a part of the application process you are required to demonstrate your ability to pay for tuition, room, board and books. This amounts to approximately $17,500 U.S. dollars for the 2000-2001 academic year (two semesters). Please submit official bank statements verifying availability of funds.
Following are the four payment options from which to choose:
Plan One
Pay the net amount due (in U.S. funds) by September 1 for the fall semester or by January 1 for the spring semester. The net amount due represents the total charges, less any scholarships, grants or campus administered loans confirmed by the Financial Aid Office. Indiana Wesleyan University will accept VISA, DISCOVER, or MASTERCARD as an option for payment.
Plan Two
Pay the net amount from any Canada Student Loans. Indiana Wesleyan qualifies for Canada Student Loans and Bursaries. Students should check with their Provincial government for eligibility requirements.
Plan Three
Pay balance due from campus employment.
Plan Four
Join Academic Management Services and spread the net amount due for the entire academic year over a 10 or 12 month period. The net amount is described in Plan One. Students may choose to make their first monthly payment to A.M.S. by June 1 for the 12-month payment plan. Students who registered after August 1 may still join A.M.S. by making the necessary retroactive payments.
Transferring Credits
Students at Canadian universities can receive Indiana Wesleyan credit if the Canadian institution is accredited, and if the grade(s) achieved are "C" or above. Indiana Wesleyan accepts passing credits from all other Wesleyan schools if the grade of "C" or above is achieved. Students from Ontario can receive credit from passing OAC courses.
If you are transferring from another institution you will need to have each of the schools you have attended following high school send your transcript. Transfer information is required of all tranferring students.
Heading South
When IWU has received your $100 U.S. tuition deposit and official financial statements which demonstrate availability of funds, the university will send the Immigration I-20 form. When you arrive at the border, have your financial statements, your letter of acceptance, and your I-20 form. The immigration officer will evaluate your records and your intention to return to your home country, and will permit you to enter the U.S.
If you plan to fly, let us know your flight schedule and we will arrange travel from the airport to IWU.
Indiana Wesleyan University is located in Marion, Ind, just an hour's drive south of Ft. Wayne and an hour north of Indianapolis off Interstate 69. |
