Student Activities

The Division of Social Sciences is committed to preparing students for dynamic leadership in their professions, families and communities. Therefore, in addition to a primary focus on academic preparation, students are encouraged to engage in serving their local communities, nation and world.

Division faculty and students are involved in a variety of both on- and off-campus activities, such as the following:
  • Practicum courses such as:
    • working on a local, state or national political campaign
    • assisting in court offices in Marion or Grant County, or in a student’s home county
    • assisting a local, state or national elected official
    • serving in a lawyer’s office
  • Student-led clubs and organizations such as the Political Science Club and the College Republicans.
  • Volunteer leadership in churches or community service organizations such as the Crisis Pregnancy Center, Beat the Streets program, the Salvation Army, the YMCA/YWCA, youth tutoring programs and many more.
  • Campus leadership—52 percent of IWU student body presidents and 44 percent of student newspaper editors have been department majors, 1972-1999.
  • Student-led fundraising, advertising, and organization to bring nationally-known guest speakers to campus
  • Studying/serving for a summer or a semester off-campus with a variety of organizations such as:
    • Focus on the Family Institute
    • Oxford University in England
    • Youth With A Mission schools in the U.S. and abroad
    • Logos Foundation (a former journalistic endeavor in Slovakia initiated by a department graduate)
    • Family Research Council
    • CCCU American Studies Program
    • Presidential Leadership Program at the Reagan Ranch
    • National Journalism Center directed by M. Stanton Evans
    • Leadership Institute
    • Heritage Foundation
    • Young America’s Foundation
The division is proud to be a part of Indiana Wesleyan University which, as an institution, is increasingly becoming known in Marion, Grant County and the state of Indiana, for its life-changing involvement in community leadership and service.
