Practicum

As part of the curriculum devoted to experiential, practical learning, and community service, the practicum provides students opportunity for directed study in politics, law, and economics. The purpose of the practicum is to provide the student awareness and understanding of his or her chosen field through observation and participation.

Based on individual academic program and career objectives, the practicum student will be placed with an appropriate professional agency, office, or service project. The number and variety of participating professionals afford a wide array of placement assignments in politics, law, and economics. Placement of a student in an agency, office, or organization is initiated by either the Practicum Faculty Supervisor or an interested practicing professional willing to commit themselves to the standards and responsibilities of the practicum. The practicum involves the student in the many facets of the public service; among the elements of this involvement are agency policies, functions, problems, needs, resources, and relationships to the community and other service systems.

As outlined in the Practicum Handbook, the practicum student is expected to meet the minimum on-site hours appropriate for course enrollment and is encouraged to make available additional hours upon request of the supervising professional. In the performance of duties assigned during the practicum, the student must keep in complete confidence information learned, evidence gathered, documentation shown, etc. As a representative of the University in the community, the student is to maintain a professional demeanor, dress in an appropriate manner, and communicate in a proper attitude. The student is not expected to be available during regular University or agency vacations unless otherwise indicated by the supervising professional.
