Political Science Pre-law

The Political Science Pre-Law major has been designed to prepare students for service in the legal profession. Students are challenged to think analytically and presuppositionally to prepare them to do well on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and to succeed in law school. Pre-Law students are expected to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, and to strive for 3.5 or higher.

The IWU Pre-Law program is proud of its long standing record: since its inception in 1972, nearly 100% of the students who complete the pre-law program and take the LSAT succeed on the LSAT and are admitted to law school. Consequently, many IWU Pre-Law graduates are serving effectively in the legal profession today.

The Pre-Law Advisor, who takes a tutorial interest in each student, assists each Pre-Law student in selecting a second major. The following have been frequently chosen as second majors by Pre-Law students: Accounting, Biology, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, English, History, and Writing. Others include Christian Ministries, Communication Studies, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Economics, Finance, Intercultural Studies, Leadership, Management, Marketing, Mathematics, Psychology, Religion/Philosophy, Social Studies, Social Work, and Youth Ministries. Completing a second major provides pre-law students with a valuable broad background and with greater marketability.

In addition to the courses taken by all Political Science majors (see the Political Science major and/or the Academic Catalog), Pre-Law majors choose several elective courses which are designed to prepare them for law school, such as Introduction to Law, American Constitutional History, Criminal Law, Court Procedures, and Logic.

See the following pages from the academic catalog (2003-2005) for specific major requirements, general education requirements, and degree requirements relative to the Political Science and Political Science Pre-Law majors. Also see the full academic catalog (2003-2005) for specific course descriptions.

Students who are interested in pursuing Political Science Pre-Law as a first or second major, need to consult with the Coordinator of the Department of History and Political Science and then declare a Political Science Pre-Law major in the Records Office.
