Pi Gamma Mu International Social Science Honor Society

Membership
Each year the Division of Social Sciences nominates qualified students for membership in this highly regarded honor society. Membership provides students with permanent academic recognition and enhances their professional resumes.

Qualifications
All students majoring in one of the Division of Social Sciences degree programs: economics, international relations, history, political science, political science pre-law, public policy, social studies, and social studies education are eligible for membership if they meet the following requirements by the end of the spring semester:
  • will have completed 80 or more semester hours.
  • will have completed 20 or more semester hours in a social science major, including at least 12 hours from upper division courses (numbered 300 or above) taught in the department in which their major is housed.
  • will have an overall and major GPA of 3.5 or higher. (Regarding transferred courses, grades earned in social science courses and courses counting toward the major which have transferred from other institutions are counted in the GPA computation.)
  • will have completed at least three semesters of study at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Procedure
Students do not need to apply for membership in Pi Gamma Mu. Every spring each department in the Division of Social Sciences reviews the academic records of department majors to determine which majors qualify for Pi Gamma Mu. Qualifying students are notified by letter in early April that they are being nominated for membership. It should be noted that most students are nominated during their senior year, after they have demonstrated their scholarship in upper division courses.

Nominees are required to attend a meeting for nominees in early April. Those who decide to join Pi Gamma Mu pay a fee by the end of the semester and gain a lifetime membership to the honor society.

The International Pi Gamma Mu office provides members with additional benefits, such as a membership certificate for framing, a membership key and subscriptions to Pi Gamma Mu publications. Pi Gamma Mu International Honors Society Home Page (Winfield, Kansas)

The Division of Social Sciences encourages all students majoring in the division to strive to qualify for Pi Gamma Mu membership.
