Division of Social Sciences Mission and Goals

IWU’s Mission
Indiana Wesleyan University is a Christ-centered academic community committed to changing the world by developing students in character, scholarship and leadership.
Goals
The goals of the Division of Social Sciences are commensurate with and seek to implement the mission of Indiana Wesleyan University. Accordingly, the Division of Social Sciences seeks to enable both general education students and social science majors to study human nature and behavior in relationship with God, time (past and present), world cultures, American cultures, government, the market, society and the physical and cultural environment.

Human nature and behavior are studied both from the presuppositions and perspective of a biblical Christian world view and from the presuppositions and perspectives of non-Christian worldviews in order to prepare students for a larger understanding and more effective service to God and man.

The division also seeks to enable students to develop an historical and integrated understanding of civilization, intercultural relationships and contemporary society, equipping them to recognize the interrelationships of the social sciences and to pursue life and professional service from a unified perspective.

The division’s liberal arts base seeks to combine and balance the theoretical and the applied. Students are instructed and prepared for their professions from a strong liberal arts foundation.

The division also seeks to instruct social science students and majors in the content, language and methodology of their projected professions. This prepares them for graduate and professional studies and for professional service in government, law, teaching, research, community service, civil service, writing, high school counseling, business, social service or ministry.

Finally, the division seeks to motivate students and majors to develop their gifts to their highest potential and to provide them with the knowledge base, skills, commitments and behavioral patterns to serve God and man effectively in this present age.
