Personal Attention
The notable success of the Division of Social Sciences in attracting and retaining students has not occurred by default. The division has recruited strong faculty who are committed to excellence in teaching and professional practice and who take a personal interest in students and their success.
Advising
Each department in the division provides professional and systematic advising for majors. Academic advising, directed by department coordinators, is designed to determine the interests and objectives of students and to acquaint them with the major or majors which will enable them to realize their goals.
Academic Assistance
Freshmen in the division are introduced to skills for academic success and, when such would be helpful, are informed of The Aldersgate Center, featuring an excellent tutoring program. All division students are encouraged to take a one-credit course in speed reading, which enables them to read more rapidly with greater comprehension.
High Completion Rate
Students are given careful, personal attention by their faculty advisors in order to assist them in setting academic and professional goals. As a consequence, those who select a division major have a strong commitment to their work, and an exceptionally high percentage of majors complete the program and graduate successfully.
Practicum
It is noteworthy that, because each major is designed to give students both a theoretical and a practical understanding of the discipline, most students receive faculty supervision of a practicum experience. Those planning to go directly to graduate school receive faculty instruction and oversight of their research and writing preparatory to graduate school. |
