Previously, he taught for a number of years at Azusa Pacific University, where the student body twice named him “professor of the year.” At Indiana Wesleyan, Dr. Pattengale helped develop and oversees the university’s central course, “Becoming World Changers.” He also teaches two vital courses in the Department of History and Political Science: History of Middle East and Africa and a senior capstone course, History and Social Science Seminar.
Dr. Pattengale was recently honored by being named to the National Advisory Board of The National Resource Center for First-Year Students and Students in Transition for 2003-06, centered at the University of South Carolina. It was featured in numerous media stories—such as a centerfold feature in U.S.News & World Report.
Dr. Pattengale also received a NACADA award in 1999 for developing the IWU Virtual Advising Link System, which assists faculty in their academic advising of students. Dr. Pattengale has led the development of many long lasting programs, ranging from Heads Up Baseball and The John Wesley Honors College, both in their fifth years, to the Night of Champions in Los Angeles, in its 16th year (serving 4,000 teens annually). He has also raised substantial funding for educational causes, along with developing and directing the Van Kampen family’s private foundation.
He has authored and contributed to a variety of books, from Heads Up Choices and Consider the Source to The Anchor Bible Dictionary, Great Events of American History, A History of the Modern Olympics, Great Events from History II: Human Rights, and On Your Mark. His forthcoming books include A History of World Civilizations from a Christian Perspective (Triangle Publishing), The Dream Needs to Be Stronger than the Struggle (pending), and The Buck Creek Chronicles (currently appearing in a Gannett newsprint series, www.indwes.edu/buckcreek).
Jerry coined the phrase, “Life is Short Pray Hard,” and he is now realizing its merit as he looks to the next generation. He and his wife Cindy have four sons.
Jerry speaks regularly at national conferences and on college campuses. He has a Ph.D. and a M.A. from Miami University (OH), and a M.A. from Wheaton (IL).
