Double Major
All division students are encouraged to earn a double major (within the usual four-year enrollment), giving them a broad background and greater marketability. Academic advisors assist students in selecting the major combinations best suited to their gifts, interests and objectives.
Three of the majors offered in the division: economics, history, and political science, are designed, having streamlined requirements, to serve well as either first or second majors. Therefore, students are able to complete two majors well within the usual 124 hours required to graduate.
This double major system serves many students outside the Division of Social Sciences. Every academic major in this division helps to enable any student to broaden their base, enlarge their perspective and increase their marketability. As a consequence, a growing number of students from other divisions are taking a second major in the Division of Social Sciences. Students may also double major within the division.
Double Majors for Pre-Law and Pre-Teaching Students
Pre-law: The pre-law advisor strongly recommends that every student interested in law school earn a double major. The first major should be political science pre-law, which is designed to prepare them to succeed on the LSAT and be admitted to law school. The second major, of their choosing, will increase their marketability and give them a wider foundation for their specialized studies in law school.
Pre-Teaching: Social studies education majors can easily earn a second major in history or political science. Some also select economics. |
