Steve Horst
Assistant Professor of Religion

Steve was born in Dallas, Texas, while his father was completing seminary and grew up a "pastor’s kid" as his father pastored in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and New York. The occasion for embracing Jesus as Lord was before his senior year in high school while on staff at Camp-of-the-Woods, a Christian family camp in the Adirondacks.

Steve attended Houghton College in N.Y., where he met his "wife-to-be," Cherie, by stopping to change her flat tire. A philosophy and humanities double major, he was well-equipped to go on for more schooling. After graduating in 1977, he began an M.A. in philosophy of religion at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Ill. Because of the decision to add an M.Div, and Cherie deciding to work on two degrees, they stayed in the Chicago area until 1986. After a brief stint at Houghton’s Buffalo campus, Steve once again went back to school, this time pursuing an M.A. in marriage and family therapy from Syracuse University. After a year as a family specialist at a treatment center for drug and alcohol abuse, Steve became the director of counseling ministries at a large Wesleyan church in western New York. Three years later, they were asked by Wesleyan World Missions to go as career missionaries to Russia to do training and seminars on parenting and other topics.

After only about a year, however, Cherie became ill, and they returned home to the U.S. and settled in Indianapolis, where Steve began teaching philosophy at IWU as an adjunct professor. Although Steve was teaching full-time at IWU beginning in 1999, he commuted to Marion until August 2001, when he, his wife and their two daughters, Bess and Sandy, moved to the Marion area. He has recently begun a Ph.D. in theology and religious studies with the University of Wales in Lampeter, focusing on Dostoevsky’s criticism of modernism.
