Research In Biology
Biology is one of the broadest and most rapidly changing fields of study
in the world of science. Introductory science students sometimes
make the mistake of thinking that biology is all about memorizing
terms, structures, and species. In reality, we still know very
little about how life works at its most intricate levels. The
student of Biology needs to hold an insatiable curiosity about
how life works; then the science will never seem boring or old.
Because there is still so much to learn about the world God has given us,
each of the faculty members in the Department of Biology is
actively pursuing research objectives in their field of interest.
Although not an academic requirement, students of Biology are
strongly encouraged to associate themselves with a faculty member
and become actively involved in research in their laboratory.
Research projects vary widely, ranging from environmental biology,
to animal behavior, cellular signaling mechanisms, and gene
regulation. To see a brief description of the research interests
of each biology faculty member visit the faculty

Research in the Rockies:
Dr. Webb has been interested in the nutritional needs and physiology
of long-distance backpackers and runners for several years.
Many people have observed that long-distance backpackers and
runners need to consume increased calories to maintain body
weight and provide energy to support their activity level. However,
most people focus on eating elevated levels of carbohydrates
in the field, rather than a balanced diet that includes additional
protein. For this reason muscle wasting and fatigue plague the
endurance athlete after a week of day-long strenuous activity.
Approximately every other summer, Dr. Webb takes a group of
students to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to research the
effects of protein supplementation on long-range backpackers.
If you are interested in participating in the summer 2004 trip
please contact Dr. Webb.
Here is a sampling of pictures taken on the summer 2002 trip.
