Computer Information and Sciences - Facilities
Most computer science and information systems classes are taught
in Burns
Science Hall, which is less than a five-minute walk from
the student dormitories. The Science Hall was remodeled and
extended in 1999-2000. Each classroom is equipped with a computer
and document camera, both connected to an overhead projection
system. Almost all natural sciences and mathematics division
faculty have their office in the Science Hall, and study tables
are available in nearby areas of the building.

A 27-station computer classroom and a 20-station computing lab are located
within the building. Each workstation has the ability to access
the Linux server, compilers required for current courses and
other convenient software for completing course projects. Some
computer science and information systems classes are partially
taught in the classroom, and students have access to the academic
computing lab from 8am until 11pm Monday through Saturday.

Our majors lab is accessible to all computer science and computer
information systems majors. However, the computers in this lab
are given to outstanding majors as a research tool during their
years at IWU. Each spring the department faculty nominate students
for inclusion in the room. Students are encouraged to experiment
with these machines trying out new software, learning how to
configure hardware and software and generally exercising creative
thought.

Although the computer science and information systems major
is growing, most of our courses are currently less than 20 students.
By the time our students leave IWU, they have made close friendships
and professional relationships.
