Born in Seoul, South Korea, Pianist Phoenix Park-Kim began playing the piano at the age of five and gave her first public performance at seven years old. Since then she has performed throughout the U.S., South Korea, Italy, Switzerland and Russia in solo, orchestral, and chamber music settings.
Phoenix graduated summa cum laude from Yonsei University in Seoul, where she received Bachelors degrees in both Piano Performance and English Literature. In 1999, she came to the United States to study with Dr. Lian Tan at Miami University on a full tuition scholarship. She completed the Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Dr. Robert Weirich and served as his teaching assistant.
Phoenix has won numerous scholarship awards and piano competitions, including 1st place in the Miami Concerto Competition, the Jefferson City Concerto Competition and Kansas City Philharmonia Concerto Competition. In addition, she has also appeared as a soloist with the Korean Philharmonic Orchestra, Marion Philharmonic and the UMKC Conservatory Orchestra among others. She has performed in master classes of Awadagin Pratt, Paul Badura-Skoda, Berry Snyder, and Stanislav Ioudenitch to name a few.
Phoenix has given performances in various music festivals including the Aspen Summer Music Festival, ARIA International Summer Academy, Piano Texas and the Summer Music School in Siena, Italy. She has collaborated with many ensembles including the Phoenix Piano Trio and Oxford String Quartet. She was also a featured performer on the show Live From FM 91 on WGTE. In addition to traditional performances in concert halls, Phoenix is dedicated to bringing music to the underserved public as well as providing more exposure to musical compositions that are little known. In this endeavor, she was awarded the Lilly research grant which enabled her to conduct research on classical piano music written by African American composers. From this she made a world premiere recording of Nathaniel Dett’s suite for piano, Cinnamon Grove.
Phoenix often serves as an adjudicator for auditions and competitions and has given presentations and lecture-recitals at national and international conferences. Her recordings are available on various websites including cdbaby.com and iTunes. She is currently an Associate Professor of Piano at Indiana Wesleyan University.
