Admission
to Major Area Studies and Upper Divisional Hearing Admission
to the major area studies in all four emphases is granted by the music faculty
through the Upper Divisional Hearing. This is a performance and oral examination
in which the candidate's applied and academic progress is evaluated and he/she
is interviewed regarding career goals and courses complete. Hearing forms are
available from the Music Office. The applicant must meet the following standards
to qualify: - Must
have completed a minimum of 59 semester hours at the beginning of the fall semester
in which he/she expects to be classified with Upper Divisional standing.
- Must
have earned a grade point average of 2.75 or above in all work.
- Must
have a 3.0 GPA in music subjects and no grade below C in ANY music course.
Hearings are usually scheduled during exam week at the end of the student's sophomore
year. The student will perform a minimum of 10 minutes and then be questioned
by the department faculty regarding material in music classes already taken. No
more than one selection of music performed for the hearing may be used for the
graduation recital. If the performance area is changed a hearing must be completed
in the new applied subject.
NOTE: If a student fails to meet major area requirements, admission to upper level
studies may be denied and re-application will be necessary. In undergraduatee of the latter,
the student will not be allowed to register for the courses listed below until
the upper divisional hearing has been passed:
(Course # 300 or above) Class Piano E and F Keyboard Skills I and II
Arranging Form and Analysis Composition Music History and Literature
I and II Piano Pedagogy Vocal Literature Band and Orchestra Methods
Senior High/Junior High/Middle School Music Methods Church Music II Practicum
