The IWU athletic training education program desires to be recognized as a program committed to world changing and servanthood, a high standard of care and Christian development. Our program is accredited by CAATE, the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education.
Athletic Training Student Responsibilities
Direct Observation athletic training students:
This is the beginning level in the IWU Athletic Training Education Program. First-year athletic training majors will achieve this status by declaring athletic training as a major, and enrolling in the beginning classes in the athletic training curriculum. Students will remain at this level throughout their first semester observing athletic training room and department procedures, as they are performed by the athletic training faculty, staff, and athletic training students.
Athletic training students:
To achieve this status one must be accepted through the official application process of the IWU Athletic Training Education Program. Athletic Training Students consist of second, third, and fourth year students. As an athletic training student, one will progressively become more active in the program as proper experience and knowledge are gained. The athletic training faculty will assign athletic training students certain responsibilities. One may be given more responsibility than another as his or her knowledge, skill level and attitude proves capable of more responsibility.

Sports medicine professional experience
Athletic training students have the unique opportunity to participate in two internship experiences in a physician’s office and hospital. These internships take athletic training students to Central Indiana Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, where the student will observe and participate in the daily operations of a physician’s daily practice. The CIO internship is directed by Jeremy J. Hunt, MD, IWU athletic training team physician and medical director along with Mendy Rodeffer, MA, LAT, ATC. Marion General Hospital offers both inpatient and outpatient physical therapy opportunities for athletic training students to experience a variety of injuries/conditions. Michelle Renaud, MS, PTA, LAT, ATC supervises students at MGH.
High school clinical experience
Athletic training students at IWU may also participate in a high school setting. Athletic training students may obtain clinical hours under the supervision of a certified athletic trainer at local high schools. These rotations are coordinated by Heidi Zimmerman, LAT, ATC, Marion High School head athletic trainer and Ryan Fagan, MEd, LAT, ATC, Oak Hill High School head athletic trainer.

This unique experience can give the athletic training student an appreciation for the differences in how universities deliver athletic training services. K.C. Hackman, MS, LAT, ATC, and Adam Sparks, LAT, ATC, coordinate and supervise this rotation.
