Faculty of the Division of Business
Jerry E. Showalter, CPA, Associate Professor of Accounting & Business
General Information
Jerry Showalter has taught in and administered the business department since 1966. Though he has taught the full range of courses offered by the department, he currently teaches courses in accounting, income tax and personal finance.
He was born and raised in Marion and loves Indiana's flatlands and "amber waves of grain." Jerry and his wife Judy grew up in the same Quaker church, where they were married on December 23, 1967. Judy, an elementary education graduate of Taylor University, teaches fourth grade at Riverview Elementary School in Marion.
Twins were born to them (a surprise!) on April 14, 1971. Their daughter, Jaena Womack, and her husband Jim, serve as children and family life pastors at College Wesleyan Church in Marion. Their son, Joel, is employed as manager, communication standards at Ten United, an advertising agency in Columbus, Ohio. Both children are graduates of IWU.
Professional Involvement
Professor Showalter has served on financial boards of numerous church, civic and academic organizations. He is a member of the Christian Business Faculty Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Indiana CPA Society, the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences, and is a charter member of the IWU Pi Gamma Mu Social Science Honorary Society. He currently serves as president elect of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Faculty Athletic Representative Association.
Accomplishments and Interests
Professor Showalter established the business department in 1966 and served as the only faculty member of the department until 1977 when he joined the staff of Nationwide Management, Inc. as assistant controller. He continued to teach part-time for the department until his return to full-time teaching in 1979. He enjoys preparing tax returns and financial statements and operated his own CPA firm from 1978 until 1994.
He enjoys various team and individual sports and operates the scoreboard for home basketball games. He currently serves as Eligibility Chair for the Mid-Central College Conference and NAIA Region VIII. During the summer he and Judy enjoy canning and freezing the "fruits" of their half-acre vegetable garden, fruit trees and grape arbor. Golf and fishing get squeezed in as time and weather permit.
