General Information
Admission to the art program:
Application for admission to the art program may be made by the student who has completed the freshman year in the program with a minimum of 18 hours toward the art major. Admission to the program requires a formal screening process separate from the initial declaration of an intent to major in art. The student must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the course work for the art major or minor. Failure to do so may necessitate repeating courses or withdrawal from the art program. An application for acceptance to the program must be made in writing using the "Admission to the Art Program" form available from the Division of Art office. During the sophomore year, a portfolio of course work is required from each student requesting admission to any studio art major in the program.
Continuation in the art major:
Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA in the course work within the selected art major. Failure to do so may necessitate repeating courses or withdrawal from the art major. It is to the student's advantage to complete the drawing and design requirements (Drawing I " II and Design I " II) within the first two semesters since they are prerequisites to almost all other studio classes.
Scholarships:
An application for an art scholarship may be requested by contacting the art department. The applicant should complete the form and return with at least 15 slides representing two and three-dimensional work. Scholarships are based on at least a cumulative B+ average (3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale).
Study abroad:
Students have the opportunity to study art history with Professor Williams in Italy and England. They received three hours credit if so desired. This three-hour course usually occurs during the May term.
Independent learning:
Advanced studies in independent areas are allowed after the student has taken all the courses in his or her particular major.
Job opportunities in art:
It is the desire of the university to help the students find employment after graduation. These areas include private and public school teaching, computer graphics, photography, museum work, illustration and freelance work.
West gallery:
The west gallery features works from the Bonta and Howard collections of paintings and photographic works, valued at more than $1.5 million. We are fortunate to have such wonderful pieces in our permanent collection.
Student changing gallery:
Works of art in this gallery are changed every month. This gallery includes the work of students and works by visiting artists who want to show and/or sell their art.
