The potter “throws” clay on the wheel, then turns, trims, glazes and fires it. The illustrator brings subtle changes to a visual story. The painter brushes life onto a blank canvas, commanding something to come forth from nothing. The interior designer creates beauty from function, infusing space with personality. The graphic artist constructs a page with elements that compel and surprise. The teacher pours passion into the classroom presentation, pushing and pulling young students toward artistic appreciation. Meanwhile, the photographer pre-visualizes an idea and captures their personal vision. In fact, the mission of the Division of Art is to show students how to make an impact with the pursuit of excellence in the visual arts. Through personal mentoring and a variety of majors, students discover infinite possibilities for impacting the world for the Kingdom of God.

Ceramics is an exciting and dynamic discipline that deals with aesthetics well as form and function to create unique objects for everyday use or as a piece of fine art. In a world where so many things are mass-produced, there is still a place for the one-of-a-kind.
Computer Graphics will equip you with a knowledge that extends far beyond the computer screen by incorporating drawing, two-dimensional design, and digital photography classes. Couple these with courses in color theory, computer typography, Web design and computer illustration.
Fine Art provides a strong foundation with exposure to a variety of creative disciplines including drawing, digital photography, ceramics, computer graphics, and art history classes along with your choice of art electives.
Illustration classes will have you mixing visual symbols, conceptual thinking and technical skill. Using both traditional and technology-based media, your unique style of illustration will help you develop your personal expression.
Interior Design is a hands-on academic major that will prepare you to interact with real clients. With this degree you’ll be starting your own home-based business, delving into commercial design, residential design, specialty furniture design, AutoCAD drafting, materials sales or architectural work.
Painting offers courses specifically devoted to studio painter, but you’ll round out your study with classes on drawing, two- and three-dimensional design, digital imagery, ceramics, computer graphics, visual communications and color theory.
Photography includes the study of design, photo history, documentary photography, fine art photography, contemporary photo techniques, product photography, digital photography, photo illustration and lighting techniques.
Printmaking is the study of intaglio (etching and engraving), monotype lithography, serigraphy (silk screen) and relief printmaking (woodcut and linocut). You will develop essential skills with printmaking tools, materials and processes and grasp their characteristics and appropriateness to various image-making processes.

Art Education will equip you with all of the necessary requirements for teacher certification and give you the foundation you need in the fine arts.
Pre-Art Therapy allows you to apply art skills and counseling skills together in a therapy setting. Graduate school is required for licensing.
In the beginning
All incoming freshmen enroll as Pre-art majors.
Rather than requiring a portfolio review prior to
enrolling at IWU, art students enter as Pre-art majors
until they have completed the sophomore review
process, which happens during the second semester
of the sophomore year.
The review process and formal admission to the
Art major requires submission of a portfolio of 10
studio projects from your college coursework, formal
written application, and the completion of your
major's core requirements and one course from your
declared major.
Where to find inspiration
If you need a journey to inspire the imagination,
consider spending a semester in the land Down
Under at the Australia Studies Centre, the Wesley
Institute for Ministry and the Arts near Sydney,
Australia, or on a photo shoot to New Zealand and
the Pacific Rim, to China, or Ireland or maybe Italy
where you could study some of the world's greatest
masters of art. If you're really adventuresome,
you could hike to base camp at Mt. Everest to
photograph and minister to the people of Nepal
with Professor Curfman.
A culminating experience
While the sophomore review process is
critical to your entrance into one of the Art
majors, the senior exhibit is imperative to
the graduation process. The senior exhibit is
required of all Ceramics, Computer Graphics,
Fine Art, Illustration, Painting, Photography and
Printmaking majors. This capstone class
gives you the opportunity for exhibition
experience. In conjunction with the senior
exhibit, students present a DVD portfolio of 12 representative works from their respective
majors, to be reviewed as a final assessment of
student performance.

the art world and a career within your specific
major. You have been given the tools and conceptual
skills necessary for success. Follow the dream and
pursue the unique calling God has planned for
your life.
