Barbara Arlene Ihrke

Barbara Ihrke was a missionary nurse in the Democratic Republic of Congo for 11 years. Over the years her ministries included: teaching in nursing and theological education, working in a hospital, and establishing primary health care including clean water sources. Spiritual health was also a focus of ministry.

Currently Barbara teaches International Health, Tropical Health and Transcultural Nursing including the practicum component. Her areas of nursing practice are home care, long-term care, and international health care. July 2001 she taught nursing for two weeks in Malawi, Africa. Previously, she had been to Russia twice for teaching opportunities. Frequently she mentors students on international trips. Barbara was on sabbatical in Gabon, Africa August through December, 2004. She taught beginning nursing skills at Bongolo Evangelical Hospital.

Research interests include education technology use by nursing faculty, multicultural issues, and use of computers by older adults. As a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, she has served as vice-president and president in the local chapter - Eta Chi, and on the protocol committee at the international level. She is published in Computers in Nursing and by W. B. Saunders.
