Chemistry Facilities

Welcome to the Indiana Wesleyan University Chemistry Department. Courses for chemistry majors are taught in Burns Hall of Science and Nursing. The Chemistry Department shares this building with our sister departments in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Division (biology, computer science, mathematics, and physics) and with the Nursing Division. An extensive enlargement and renovation of the building was completed in 2000, providing spacious and comfortable classrooms, each with an Internet-linked computer and overhead projection system.

As part of the new construction, we were able to purchase a wide array of new equipment. We invite you to take a quick peek at the labs and classrooms that would become your home if you join us here. We think you will agree that there are no better facilities anywhere.

We emphasize hands-on learning, so the equipment you see in our Instrumentation Lab (Room 317) would be available for you to use. As you take more advanced chemistry courses you will learn to operate an NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer), IR (infrared spectrophotometer), GC (gas chromatograph), AA (atomic absorption spectrophotometer), HPLC (high performance liquid chromatograph), and much more. Our graduates are well-trained, whether they move on to graduate school, medical school, or into the job market.

Be sure to take a look at the research labs that are reserved for undergraduate projects (Rooms 306, 308, 310). All our chemistry majors do at least one independent research project. You will be assigned to one of the three research labs, so that you have a place to set up and run your experiments without interference from the academic lab operations. A faculty member will supervise your work, but you will have the opportunity to explore some aspect of chemistry with as much independence as possible.

As you take a virtual look around, we hope you will begin to picture yourself as a chemistry major at IWU! Then come give us a real visit, and we'll talk about reasons beyond hardware and facilities that IWU is the place to be.
