Chemistry

Mission
Our goal is to produce chemistry majors who are ready for entrance into graduate training and entry into related industrial or medical careers. We seek to accomplish this via integration of excellent teaching with superior laboratory experiences for our students. Underlying this, we desire that every graduate develop spiritually in order to impact his or her world for Christ.

Purpose
The chemistry major is designed to provide the student with a general background in chemistry and to develop skills so that one is prepared for (1) graduate studies in chemistry; (2) entrance into professional schools such as medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy or veterinary medicine; (3) entry-level positions in chemical research laboratories or environmental control laboratories and (4) chemistry teaching positions.

General Education Competencies
The general education speech and intercultural requirements can be met by enrolling in COM110, Speech Communications, and any intercultural activity approved by the general education committee. For chemistry majors/minors, a grade of "C" is required in all chemistry and required cognate courses. Non-majors must obtain a grade of "C" in all prerequisite coursework. Only courses numbered 125 or higher will be counted toward the major or minor.

Bachelor of Science

A Bachelor of Science major in chemistry is designed for majors who plan to pursue graduate level work in chemistry, biochemistry, medicine or related interdisciplinary areas. This degree requires 49 hours of coursework, which is met by taking a minimum of 32 hours in chemistry and 17 hours of cognate (prerequisite) courses listed below. The following courses in chemistry must be included in the major:

Required Courses: Credit hours

CHE125, 126 General Chemistry I, II 10
CHE235, 236 Organic Chemistry I, II 8
CHE350 Analytical Chemistry 4
CHE440 Physical Chemistry I 3
CHE461 Physical Chemistry Lab 1
CHE450 Physical Chemistry II 3
CHE490* Biology/Chemistry Senior Seminar 1
CHE495 Research in Chemistry 2
*Note that the seminar is a biology/chemistry course which applies to both areas.

Required Cognate Courses: Credit hours

MAT253, 254 Calculus I, II 8
PHY221, 222 University Physics I, II 9

Bachelor of Science majors are strongly advised to add additional cognate coursework from the following:

MAT255 Calculus III 4
MAT353 Differential Equations 3
BIO125 Principles of Biology 4

Associate of Science or Chemistry Minor

The Associate of Science degree or the chemistry minor requires a minimum of 24 hours of coursework in chemistry.
Requirements Credit hours

CHE125, 126 General Chemistry I, II 10
CHE235, 236 Organic Chemistry I, II 8
CHE350 Analytical Chemistry 4
CHE490 Biology/Chemistry Senior Seminar 1
Electives at or above the 200 level 1-4
*Note that the seminar is a Biology/Chemistry course which applies to both areas.

Bachelor of Arts

The Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) degree is designed for those science majors who plan to pursue science related careers in medicine or an entry-level position in industry. This degree requires 45 hours of coursework, which is met by taking 26 hours in chemistry and 19 hours in required cognate courses.

Requirements Credit hours

CHE125, 126 General Chemistry I, II 10
CHE235, 236 Organic Chemistry I, II 8
CHE350 Analytical Chemistry 4
CHE440 Physical Chemistry I or
an elective approved by department
3
CHE490 Biology/Chemistry Senior Seminar 1

*Note that the seminar is a biology/chemistry course which applies to both areas.

Required Cognate Courses Credit hours

MAT253 Calculus I 4
PHY221, 222 University Physics I, II 9
  Any foreign language 6

A.B. majors are also strongly advised to add additional cognate coursework from the following:

MAT254 Calculus II 4
BIO125 Principles of Biology I 4

[Note: for the A.B. major CHE450, CHE461, CHE495, and MAT254 are not required. They are replaced by six hours of a foreign language, which will meet the intercultural requirement if taken at IWU.]
